What's a Web Cache and How Do I Clear It?

Caches can hide new updates, and clearing your cache can allow you to see them.

When you visit a website, your browser saves certain files—like images, code, and layout styles—so that the site loads faster the next time. This is called a cache, and it’s usually helpful. But after your site is updated, your browser might still load the old version from the cache instead of the new one.

This can make it look like your changes didn’t go through, even though they actually did.

How to clear your browser cache

To fix this, you’ll need to clear your cache, which forces your browser to re-download everything fresh from the server.

Here are some quick ways to do that:

  • Mac: Press Cmd + Shift + R (hard refresh)

  • Windows: Press Ctrl + Shift + R

  • Or, go into your browser settings and find the option to “Clear Browsing Data” or “Clear Cache” (you don’t need to clear passwords or saved logins—just the cached files)
